Liverpool has completed a £43m move for midfielder Ryan Gravenberch on the transfer deadline day, making him their fourth and final signing of the summer window. The Dutchman has signed a five-year contract with the Reds, adding depth to their midfield options.
Gravenberch, predominantly a number eight, might face difficulties displacing the current midfielders at Liverpool. However, the club seems to have plans to accommodate him, along with Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, in the same team. There have been talks of a potential change in the system to make room for these talented midfielders.
One possibility is for Gravenberch to operate in a defensive midfield two alongside Mac Allister. Meanwhile, Szoboszlai could play in a more advanced role. This tactical adjustment would push Wataru Endō to the bench but would give Liverpool enviable depth in midfield.
With this new system, Trent Alexander-Arnold would revert to a more traditional right-back role, allowing him to focus on his defensive duties. Andy Robertson, on the other hand, would regain his attacking license, offering support in the final third.
Liverpool’s defensive line will be strengthened when Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté return from their respective injuries. The pairing of Van Dijk and Konaté is expected to be the best defensive partnership for the club.
In terms of the ideal attack, Liverpool could rely on the trio of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Núñez, and Luis Díaz to provide the goals. This combination of pace, skill, and clinical finishing could make them a formidable force in the league.
However, the question that remains is whether Liverpool can emerge as dark horses in the title race or if they will have to settle for a battle to secure a top-four position. As the season progresses, the real test for Liverpool’s new signings and tactical adjustments will be seen on the pitch.
