International rugby player Api Ratuniyarawa has been sentenced to two years and 10 months for committing sexual offences, forever tarnishing his once-promising career. Ratuniyarawa admitted two counts of assault by penetration and one charge of sexual assault that took place between October 31 and November 2 last year.
The court heard that Ratuniyarawa had been without a club since London Irish went into receivership, leaving him in a vulnerable position. Despite his troubled circumstances, the rugby player had been due to play for the Barbarians in their match against Wales on November 4, 2023.
On the evenings of October 31, November 1, and November 2, Ratuniyarawa attended the Revolution bar in Cardiff, where the offences occurred. One of the victims bravely read her impact statement during the trial, expressing feelings of degradation, embarrassment, and humiliation.
In his defense, Ratuniyarawa’s lawyer stated that he had “limited recollection” of the incidents and sincerely apologized to the victims. The defense also cited the consumption of alcohol and personal upheaval as contributing factors to his behavior.
Despite Ratuniyarawa’s past accomplishments on the rugby field and being described as a dedicated and valuable asset by Fiji Rugby, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke emphasized the seriousness of the offences and the impact they had on the victims. She granted a restraining order of three years in relation to one of the victims.
This case highlights the need for a careful examination of the conduct of professional athletes, both on and off the field. Ratuniyarawa’s fall from grace serves as a reminder that even those in the limelight are not immune from accountability for their actions.
Forever Sports Online will continue to provide updates on the developments of this case and its impact on the sports community. We hope that justice is served and that the victims find the support and healing they deserve in light of these traumatic events.
