Leicester City Launches Legal Proceedings Against Premier League and EFL
Leicester City has taken the Premier League and English Football League (EFL) to court after being referred to an independent commission for alleged breaches of spending rules. The Premier League made the referral after Leicester failed to submit their audited financial accounts, potentially leading to a points deduction for the club.
The decision by the Premier League has left Leicester City “surprised and disappointed,” especially as they have been relegated from the top-flight. The club is now seeking independent legal panels to review the proceedings against the Premier League and EFL.
In addition to the Premier League referral, the EFL has placed Leicester City under a player registration embargo for alleged breaches of Profit & Sustainability Rules. The club had reported a record loss of £92.5 million for the 2021-22 season, following a pre-tax loss of £33.1 million the previous year.
Premier League clubs are allowed to incur losses of up to £105 million over three seasons, and Leicester City has yet to make their accounts for the last season public. If found guilty, Leicester could become the third club to face a points deduction for breaching spending rules.
Despite these legal challenges, Leicester City is in a strong position to make a return to the Premier League. Enzo Maresca’s side is currently level on points with leaders Leeds United in the Championship, showing promise for a successful season ahead.
