LA Clippers point guard Russell Westbrook suffered a setback on Friday night when he fractured his left hand during the first half of the game against the Washington Wizards. Westbrook did not return to the game and it was later revealed that he would be out of action for at least a week.
Westbrook, who underwent surgery three weeks ago to repair a fractured left hand, is expected to make a return to the lineup next week. The Clippers are hopeful that Westbrook could be back on the court as soon as Monday when they face off against the Indiana Pacers.
The Clippers have certainly felt Westbrook’s absence, as they have struggled to a 6-5 record without him. Westbrook has been a key contributor this season, averaging 11.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists in 58 games.
Since Westbrook began coming off the bench on Nov. 17, the Clippers have thrived with a 28-8 record. His return will provide a much-needed boost to the team, who have recently lost four out of five games.
Despite the setback, Westbrook has maintained a positive attitude, even joking during a recent game against the Portland Trail Blazers to lighten the mood for his teammates. Known for his energy, hustle, and strong defense, Westbrook is the only player to average 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists off the bench for a career since 1970-71. He also ranks in the top 10 in assists per game off the bench this season.
The Clippers and their fans are eagerly awaiting Westbrook’s return, as they look to regain their winning ways with their star point guard back in action.
