Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday has signed a lucrative four-year, $135 million contract extension with the team after arriving in a blockbuster offseason trade. The extension will keep Holiday with the Celtics through the 2027-28 season, solidifying the team’s talented core of players.
Holiday, who declined his $37.3 million player option for 2024-25 in order to sign the long-term deal, will become the fourth player in NBA history to sign a guaranteed deal worth over $100 million at the age of 33 or older, joining the ranks of LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Al Horford.
The financial terms of the extension were not disclosed by the Celtics, but it is expected to save the team money on the salary cap next year. Holiday’s arrival from the Portland Trail Blazers in September has been a game-changer for the Celtics, as he has significantly improved his shooting percentages since joining the team.
Despite a drop in his scoring average, Holiday is shooting a career-best 43% from behind the arc, including an impressive 62% on corner threes. Known for his defensive versatility, Holiday has showcased his skills on both ends of the court this season, matching up against guards, forwards, and even centers.
The extension eliminates Holiday from the free-agent market, impacting teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, who may have been interested in pursuing him with a maximum salary slot. With Holiday locked in for the foreseeable future, the Celtics look poised to continue their success and compete at the highest level in the NBA.
