Western Oregon University Rugby Clubs Make History by Qualifying for Collegiate National Championships
Both the men’s and women’s rugby clubs at Western Oregon University have achieved a remarkable feat by qualifying for the Rugby 7s Collegiate National Championships in Maryland. This is the first time in history that both teams have qualified in the same year, with the women’s team making their debut appearance at the national championships.
In an interview with OPB, women’s Head Coach Nicole Smith and men’s Head Coach Ben Barlow discussed the challenges and successes of the season leading up to the prestigious tournament. The women’s club has faced difficulties with numbers due to the lingering effects of COVID, resulting in only 11 players on the roster. Despite this, both teams have displayed resilience and determination in overcoming injuries and obstacles throughout the season.
Coach Smith emphasized the importance of mental preparation and building each other up as they prepare for the upcoming championships. The women’s team feels the pressure to represent their Oregon school and succeed at the national level, but they have received overwhelming support from the campus community, who have shown their encouragement through a good luck card and by wearing rugby gear.
Both coaches also highlighted the unique camaraderie and community aspect of rugby that sets it apart from other sports. They spoke about the inclusivity and respect in the rugby community that drew them to the sport in the first place, emphasizing the bonds formed both on and off the field.
As the Western Oregon University rugby clubs gear up for the Collegiate National Championships, they carry with them the hopes and dreams of their school and community. With their unified spirit and determination, they are ready to make history and leave a lasting impression on the national stage.
