Title: Fijian Rugby Player Receives Jail Sentence for Sexual Assaults in Cardiff Bar
In a shocking case that has left the rugby community in dismay, Fijian rugby player, Api Ratuniyarawa, has been sentenced to two years and 10 months in jail after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting three women at a bar in Cardiff city centre. The incidents occurred independently of each other on three separate nights.
The court heard that Ratuniyarawa had been in Cardiff with his team for a game the week leading up to the assaults. CCTV footage captured all of the incidents, revealing the distressing moments for the victims.
The first assault took place in the bar’s VIP area, where Ratuniyarawa cornered the victim and put his hands down her trousers. The following night, he assaulted another woman by touching her breast and bottom. The third assault occurred in the same VIP area, resulting in the victim suffering from visible injuries.
None of the victims knew Ratuniyarawa or each other before the attacks, adding to the disturbing nature of the events. Door staff asked Ratuniyarawa to leave the bar after the second assault.
During the trial, one victim shared the emotional toll the incident has had on her, describing it as “humiliating” and confessing that her studies and mental health have suffered as a result.
In a gesture of remorse, Ratuniyarawa’s defense lawyer expressed his client’s desire to apologize to the victims, recognizing the shame he has brought to himself and his family.
As part of the sentencing, Ratuniyarawa was given a three-year restraining order against one of the victims and has been added to the sex offenders register.
The repercussions of his actions have also caused significant damage to Ratuniyarawa’s rugby career. Previously playing for London Irish, the club has suspended from the Premiership and filed for administration. He had even been selected to play for the Barbarians against Wales before facing these charges.
The case serves as a stark reminder that no one is above the law and that the sports world must continue to address issues of sexual assault and misconduct.
Forever Sports Online extends its sympathy to the victims and hopes that this incident will contribute to the ongoing discussion about creating safer environments within the sporting community.
