Fijian Rugby Player Sentenced to Prison for Sexual Assaults in Cardiff Bar
Fijian rugby player, Api Ratuniyarawa, has been handed a jail sentence of two years and 10 months after admitting to sexually assaulting three women in a popular Cardiff city centre bar. The attacks, which were captured on CCTV, took place on three separate nights in the Revolution bar.
The victims, all 19 years old, had no prior connection to Ratuniyarawa or each other before the assaults occurred. Described as “humiliating”, “painful”, and leaving the victims “bleeding”, the assaults had a profound impact on their lives, including difficulties with their studies, anxiety, significant hair loss, and troubles with eating and sleeping.
Ratuniyarawa, who had been in Cardiff for rugby-related activities and was socializing with teammates, admitted to two counts of assault by penetration and one count of sexual assault. His defense lawyer argued that the excessive amount of alcohol consumed by the rugby player was a “highly significant” factor in the attacks.
The court was informed that Ratuniyarawa’s rugby career will effectively come to an end as a consequence of his actions. In addition to the prison sentence, he has been issued with a restraining order and will be added to the sex offenders register, further restricting his movements and future opportunities.
