Bayer Leverkusen Makes History with Record-Breaking Unbeaten Streak
Bayer Leverkusen made headlines in the world of football after breaking the record for the longest unbeaten streak against a European club since the introduction of UEFA club competitions in 1955. The German club achieved this feat with a 2-2 draw against Roma in the Europa League, securing their spot in the final.
Leverkusen was initially ahead in the tie against Roma, but two penalties from Leandro Paredes turned the tide in favor of the Italian club. An own goal from Gianluca Mancini and a late equalizer from Josip Stanisic ensured Leverkusen’s unbeaten streak remained intact. This season alone, Stanisic’s goal in stoppage time was Leverkusen’s 17th scored in such circumstances.
Midfielder Granit Xhaka praised the team’s mentality and desire to keep their unbeaten streak alive throughout the season. The remarkable run began with an 8-0 victory over FC Teutonia Ottensen in the German Cup on August 12.
Prior to Leverkusen’s achievement, Benfica held the record with 48 consecutive games without a loss from December 1963 to February 1965. Leverkusen’s unbeaten run includes 32 Bundesliga games, five German Cup matches, and 12 Europa League games.
With a treble within reach, Leverkusen has already clinched the Bundesliga title and faces Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final and Atalanta in the Europa League final. If Leverkusen can avoid defeat in their final two league games, they will become the first side in Bundesliga history to go the entire season unbeaten.
The top five longest unbeaten runs by a European club since 1955 now stand as follows:
1. Bayer Leverkusen (49 games)
2. Benfica (48 games)
3. Dinamo Zagreb (45 games)
4. Rijeka (45 games)
5. Rangers (44 games)
As Leverkusen eyes more success in the upcoming finals, football fans around the world are eagerly watching to see if they can truly etch their name in history.
