The Chicago Bears have made a major trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, sending quarterback Justin Fields to the Steel City in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round pick. However, that pick could potentially convert to a fourth-round pick if Fields plays 51% of the snaps for the Steelers.
Fields will now join the Steelers’ quarterback room, which already includes veteran Russell Wilson. Despite the trade, Fields is not expected to compete for the starting job in Pittsburgh.
After the trade was announced, Fields took to social media to thank the Bears organization and the city of Chicago for the opportunity to play for the team. Bears general manager Ryan Poles confirmed the trade, stating that he believes it is what is best for Fields and the Bears moving forward.
During his time with the Bears, Fields started 38 games and had a completion rate of 60.3%. He threw for 6,674 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions. With Fields no longer on the team, the Bears are now expected to select a quarterback in the first round of April’s draft.
The Bears are currently evaluating draft-eligible quarterbacks for the 2024 season under new offensive staff, led by offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. Waldron believes that the offense will work well with whichever quarterback the team chooses to draft.
Bears head coach Matt Eberflus has emphasized the importance of situational awareness and execution as key factors in evaluating the quarterbacks for the upcoming season. It will be interesting to see how the Bears’ quarterback situation unfolds in the coming months.
