The NBA’s G League Ignite Team to Disband After Successful Run
In a surprising turn of events, the NBA has announced that it will be shutting down the G League Ignite team after this season. The Ignite team, which serves as a development squad for elite draft prospects and veterans, has been a key stepping stone for players looking to make it to the next level.
The decision to cancel the Ignite team was confirmed by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver after reevaluating its future at All-Star Weekend. With the recent changes in college basketball, including the rise of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals and the transfer portal, the need for the Ignite elite team has decreased significantly.
Despite its short existence since its launch in 2020, the Ignite team has been incredibly successful in producing more than 10 draft selections, including four top-10 picks. Led by league president Shareef Abdur-Rahim, the Ignite’s roster and coaching staff have been comprised of respected former NBA players and coaches.
The Ignite team’s last game is scheduled for March 28, with prospects Matas Buzelis and Ron Holland projected to be lottery picks in the upcoming draft. As the Ignite team comes to a close, it leaves behind a lasting legacy of providing a platform for up-and-coming talent to shine on a national stage.
