Title: Exciting Changes Announced for the 2024 Premiership Season
In an effort to avoid scheduling conflicts and provide more opportunities for club fixtures, the 2024 Premiership season will introduce an eight-week break to coincide with the Six Nations tournament. This move aims to ensure the availability of England players for their respective clubs. As a result, the Premiership will see an increase in the number of teams participating, with only 10 teams contributing last season due to the demise of Worcester, Wasps, and London Irish.
Set to commence on 13 October, the same weekend as the World Cup quarter-finals, the Premiership season will run until 8 June. However, the opening three rounds of the league may overlap with the World Cup knockout stages, dependent on how far England progresses in the tournament.
One of the major changes in the upcoming season is the pause in fixtures after round 12, which will provide clubs with increased time to work with their international players. Last season, it was frustrating for clubs as frontline England players were unable to participate in more than 40% of their club’s regular season matches due to clashes between club and international fixtures. The hope now is that with fewer clashes, more England players will remain in the Premiership, boosting ticket sales and overall excitement for the league.
The season will kick off with Bristol hosting Leicester on 13 October, signaling the beginning of an action-packed season. Additionally, the Championship with its 12 participating teams will begin on 21 October. A two-legged promotion-relegation playoff between the top Championship team and the Premiership’s bottom club will determine the lineup for the next season.
Exciting news for fans is that matches will be broadcasted on the TNT Sports channel, with seven fixtures aired on this platform. Furthermore, the final match will be broadcasted for free on ITV, ensuring wider accessibility and viewership. Premiership Rugby chief executive, Simon Massie-Taylor, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season and looks forward to the collaboration with TNT Sports as the new broadcast partner.
All eyes are now set on the 2024 Premiership season, eagerly awaiting the thrilling matches, increased opportunities for club participation, and the enthralling battle between the country’s top teams. With improvements made to the schedule and broadcast arrangements, this season promises to be nothing short of unforgettable.
