Xabi Alonso Out of Running for Liverpool Manager Role
Former Liverpool player Xabi Alonso is no longer in the running to become the next Liverpool manager, as the club has abandoned plans to pursue him as a replacement for Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool had initially eyed Bayer Leverkusen coach Alonso for the role, but now Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim are considered leading candidates for the Anfield job.
Alonso, a Champions League winner with Liverpool in 2005, has led Leverkusen to the brink of their first-ever Bundesliga title this season. Despite his strong connection to the club as a player and his impressive work at Leverkusen, Liverpool has shifted their focus to other targets as Alonso is expected to remain at Leverkusen for at least another season.
With Klopp set to step down as Liverpool manager this summer, Michael Edwards, the club’s CEO of football, has identified alternative options to Alonso. De Zerbi, currently with Brighton, has strong support within the Liverpool hierarchy and is now a new favorite for the role. Sporting coach Amorim is also seen as a genuine contender to succeed Klopp.
Alonso had also been considered as a potential candidate for Bayern Munich’s vacant managerial position, but honorary Bayern president Uli Hoeness has stated that hiring Alonso this summer is “probably impossible.” Real Madrid is reportedly interested in Alonso when Carlo Ancelotti’s contract expires in 2026.
