Sydney Roosters forward Spencer Leniu has been hit with an eight-match suspension after using a racial slur against Indigenous Australian rugby league player Ezra Mam. The incident occurred during a match in Las Vegas earlier this month, with Leniu referring to Mam as a “monkey”.
Leniu pleaded guilty to the charge of contrary conduct and issued a public apology to Mam during the hearing. Despite his remorse, Mam rejected Leniu’s attempt to personally apologize. Mam released a statement expressing his anger and disappointment at the racial slur.
Roosters CEO Joe Kelly defended Leniu, stating that the club does not believe the word was used in a racially derogatory way. Kelly added that Leniu is remorseful and eager to learn more about Indigenous and Torres Strait Island cultures.
As a result of the incident, the NRL has handed down a suspension to Leniu and mandated further education for both him and the team on Indigenous, Torres Strait Island, and Pasifika cultures. Leniu will be required to undergo cultural awareness training as part of his suspension.
The incident has sparked conversation about the need for increased cultural sensitivity and education within the sports community. Leniu’s suspension highlights the NRL’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and respect for all players, regardless of their background.
