Western Oregon University Makes History with Both Men’s and Women’s Rugby Teams Qualifying for National Championships
Western Oregon University is making waves in the rugby world as both the men’s and women’s rugby clubs have successfully qualified for the Rugby 7s Collegiate National Championships in Maryland. This is a historic moment as it marks the first time that both teams have qualified in the same year. Additionally, this is also the first time that Western Oregon University’s women’s team has made it to the national championships.
The women’s team’s journey to the national championships was solidified when they emerged victorious at the Fool’s Gold Rugby 7’s Tournament hosted by Boise State on April 6. This win not only secured their spot in the national championships but also showcased the team’s strength and determination.
In light of their recent achievements, Paul Marshall from OPB had the opportunity to speak with WOU’s women’s Head Coach Nicole Smith and men’s Head Coach Ben Barlow about the season and the upcoming tournament. Barlow mentioned that the men’s team has faced challenges with building resiliency and playing through injuries this season, but they have maintained a strong team mentality throughout.
Both teams have encountered difficulties with player numbers and injuries, but they have shown resilience and determination to overcome these obstacles. Smith highlighted the importance of the mental aspect in preparing for their first-time experience at the Rugby 7’s Collegiate National Championships, emphasizing the need for focus and encouragement.
Despite the pressure of representing an Oregon school and the small college division, both coaches view this opportunity as an honor. The campus community at Western Oregon University has shown immense support for the rugby teams, with students creating good luck cards and donning team gear in solidarity.
The coaches also stressed the camaraderie and community aspect of rugby, underscoring the sport’s ability to foster relationships and inclusivity both on and off the field. As the teams gear up for the national championships, they are determined to showcase their skills and make their university proud.
