Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit is making waves in the world of American football as he pursues a new dream of playing in the NFL. The talented athlete recently left the Welsh national team to participate in the NFL International Player Pathway program, where he aims to earn a coveted spot on an NFL roster.
Rees-Zammit recently had the opportunity to showcase his skills at the University of South Florida’s pro day, with 51 scouts representing 31 teams in attendance. The rugby star impressed with a lightning-fast 4.43 time in the 40-yard dash, as well as displaying great hands and agility in his routes.
The versatile athlete is trying out as a running back, wide receiver, and returner, and has visits lined up with the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets. Rees-Zammit is part of a growing trend of international players making their mark in the NFL, with 37 players signing with teams since the program’s inception and 18 currently on rosters.
Teams now have a 17th roster spot specifically designated for international players, providing increased opportunities for athletes from around the world. Rees-Zammit is considered one of the top prospects in the program, alongside Nigerian wide receiver Praise Olatoke and English offensive lineman Travis Clayton.
Another standout international prospect is Bayron Matos, a 6-foot-8, 313-pound offensive lineman from the Dominican Republic. Matos brings a wealth of experience from playing football and basketball at USF and New Mexico, making him a valuable addition to any NFL roster.
