The rugby teams at Western Oregon University have made history by both qualifying for the Rugby 7s Collegiate National Championships in Maryland. This is the first time that both the men’s and women’s teams have qualified in the same year, and it is also the first time the women’s team has made it to the national championships.
Head Coach Nicole Smith of the women’s team and Head Coach Ben Barlow of the men’s team are both excited about the season and the upcoming tournament. The men’s team is facing challenges of resiliency and playing through injuries, while the women’s team is dealing with a lack of numbers and injuries. The women’s team is mentally preparing for their first-time experience at the championships.
Both teams are feeling the pressure to represent Oregon and the small college division well at the national championships. The campus community is rallying around the teams, showing their support with good luck cards and by wearing WOU rugby gear.
The coaches emphasize the camaraderie and community aspect of rugby as one of the things they love most about the sport. They are proud of their teams for making it to the national championships and are looking forward to seeing them compete at the highest level. Forever Sports Online will be following the journey of both teams as they make history on the national stage.
