Los Angeles Lakers’ star player, Anthony Davis, has secured his future with the team by agreeing to a record-breaking contract extension. The three-year deal is worth an eye-popping $186 million, making it the richest annual contract extension in NBA history.
This extension will keep Davis with the Lakers until 2028, earning him a total of $270 million. The 27-year-old had two years and $84 million remaining on his previous contract before becoming eligible for the extension. However, the Lakers did not waste any time in locking down their prized asset.
The team’s swift action to secure Davis’ future signifies their determination to win championships while LeBron James continues to excel. Davis and James are considered the foundation of the Lakers’ roster, having guided the team to the Western Conference finals last season.
Individually, Davis had an outstanding season, averaging 26 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game while shooting an impressive career-high of 56%. With such remarkable statistics, it is no surprise that he is a four-time All-NBA first-team player. Davis has averaged 25 points and two blocks per season five times, putting him in elite company among Lakers players.
This extension also provides a bridge beyond James’ current commitment to the franchise. James holds a player option for the 2024-2025 season, allowing the Lakers to plan ahead effectively.
The Lakers’ front office has been proactive in building a strong roster around their star duo. As well as securing Davis’ extension, they have made several moves this summer by signing promising players such as Rui Hachimura, Austin Reaves, and Gabe Vincent. These free agent acquisitions are set to stay with the Lakers through 2025.
Lakers general manager, Rob Pelinka, had nothing but praise for Davis, commending his leadership and championship pedigree. Pelinka regarded Davis as an incredible captain who played a pivotal role in delivering the franchise’s most recent championship.
With Davis’ lucrative extension and the Lakers’ commitment to building a solid supporting cast, the team looks well-positioned to contend for championships in the foreseeable future.
