NBA to Implement Stricter Resting Rules for Star Players
In an effort to increase player participation and maintain the integrity of the game, the NBA is set to pass more stringent rules and punishments to limit the resting of star players for nationally televised and in-season tournament games. The league’s competition committee has recommended a plan that would give the league office greater authority to discipline teams for violating resting rules.
Under the proposed new rules, the NBA is proposing fines of over $1 million for each instance of violating the regulations. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is determined to increase player participation as the league negotiates a new media rights deal. With the new policy, players must participate in a minimum of 65 regular-season games to be eligible for postseason awards.
Star players, defined as those who have made the All-Star or All-NBA teams in any of the three previous seasons, will be subject to the new resting regulations. The league plans to enforce these policies through independent medical reviews as well as investigations by the league office.
To ensure fairness and competitive balance, teams must manage their roster to ensure that no more than one star player is unavailable for the same game. Additionally, star players must be available for national television and in-season tournament games. The league aims to strike a balance between the number of one-game absences for star players in home and road games, with a preference for absences in home games.
The new rules also discourage long-term shutdowns or reduced roles for star players that impact the integrity of the game. Healthy players who are resting must still be present and visible to fans. The NBA will provide scenarios for excused absences, such as pre-approved designated back-to-back allowances for certain players.
By implementing these stricter resting rules, the NBA aims to enhance the fan experience, keep star players on the court, and ensure fair competition throughout the regular season and postseason. The league hopes that these measures will result in a more exciting and competitive product while negotiating a new media rights deal.
