Tonga midfielder George Moala has lost his appeal against a five-match ban, meaning he will miss three Rugby World Cup pool matches. Moala was initially banned on August 15 for a tip tackle against Canada on August 10. The disciplinary committee considered the tackle to be a red card offence and handed Moala a 10-match mid-range entry point. However, after applying 50% mitigation, the ban was reduced to five matches.

Nevertheless, Moala decided to appeal the decision on August 21 in hopes of having the ban overturned. The appeal hearing took place remotely on August 24, but unfortunately for Moala, the original ban was upheld. As a result, he will be unavailable for Tonga’s matches against Canada, Ireland, Scotland, and South Africa in the upcoming World Cup.

The consequences don’t end there for Moala. The ban also means he will miss a Top 14 match between his club, Clermont, and Perpignan. Moala’s absence will undoubtedly be felt by both his national team and club side, as he is a key player for both.

The appeal committee thoroughly reviewed the evidence presented and concluded that the original disciplinary committee’s decision was justified. Despite Moala’s inclusion in the Tonga Rugby World Cup 2023 squad, the suspension will remain in place.

This turn of events is undoubtedly disappointing for Moala, who was likely eager to make a significant impact in the Rugby World Cup. However, his absence opens up an opportunity for another player to step up and make their mark on the international stage.

Tonga will now have to reassess their strategy and make necessary adjustments to compensate for Moala’s absence. With the World Cup fast approaching, the team will need to regroup and focus on their upcoming matches.

As for Moala himself, he will have to come to terms with the disappointment of missing out on such a prestigious tournament. However, he can still contribute to Tonga’s campaign by supporting his teammates from the sidelines and preparing for his return to the pitch once his suspension is lifted.

Overall, this outcome serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations of the game. While Moala may be a talented player, no one is exempt from facing the consequences of their actions on the field.
